Umbrellas with the writing NO TO THE SPACE SHIELD, slow march with posters about the World Day of Hunger Strike, music, signatures for the on-line petition, writings on plates, speeches.

We were very close to the main square of the city, so we went to Duomo (the cathedral) to make a picture with the umbrella NO TO THE SPACE SHIELD and then we did a veeeery slow march with the posters about the World Day of Hunger strike. It was full of local people and tourists who make pictures and stopped to read and make questions and we felt this slow march is a very good, new method for our demonstration.
We collected hundreds of signatures for the petition, we wrote slogan on the plates and the end there were speeches by the regional counselor who next week will put forward a motion against the shield and Giorgio. All this in a very joyful atmosphere, with music and all the people (more or less 150)very happy to be there.
We also had some space in the media!! Two short articles in left newspapers and one minute at midday in the national public television, announcing today’s world activity. Two other TV will give the news tomorrow.

Vibrazioni (famous Italian band) concert just ended in Piazza Duomo. The lead singer not only invited people to sign the petition on the stand in the middle of the square. He also distributed a booklet of the campaign leaving it on the stage and inviting everyone to "know, because the information we receive is false, whereas it is important to know, because the right to information makes man free."
He then asked to go to www.nonviolenza.net and www.europeforpeace.eu website, spelling them out with great force.

AFTER 9 DAYS OF HUNGER STRIKE, GIORGIO SCHULTZE OBTAINED AN ENCOUNTER AT THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT, BUT THE DECISION TO STOP WITH THE STRIKE WILL DEPEND FROM THE ANSWERS HE WILL GET.

On June 11/12 Giorgio Shultze, spokesman of the New Humanism, together with a Europe for Peace delegation, will be welcomed at the European Parliament by a group of europarliamentarians and by Luisa Morgantini, Vice-President of the European Parliament. Giorgio Schultze will stop the hunger strike he began on June 1st depending on the answers he will obtain in that meeting.

Giorgio Schultze declares: «The request we are going to present in Bruxelles is that the American project about the “shield”has to be discussed into the Parliament and that one-year moratorium has to be declared about all what concerns military settlements on European territory, especially regarding to nuclar rearmament, according to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty”.

HUNGER STRIKE AGAINST THE SPACE SHIELD – 7th DAY
 
The doctor is worried about Giorgio Schultze's health conditions. The European Spokesperson for New Humanism is weakened by 170 hours of fasting. “If he continues like this,” the doctor declared “his body will not be able to self-produce the necessary glucose for his survival anymore”. Nevertheless, Giorgio Schultze insists on his protest against the American space shield.
 
 
“The relay hunger strike that I am doing together with other people of eight different cities in Europe is a nonviolent protest meaning: we don’t eat today in order not to eat our fingers tomorrow.” Giorgio Shultze declared, “We must try whatever we can in order to denounce the threat of going back to the cold war and an arms race that finds Europe in the middle of a nuclear rearmament program, in spite of all nuclear non-proliferation treaties. After almost 20 years it seems that the world forgot the fall of the Berlin wall, and governments prefer to invest in the death industry rather than fighting against starvation*. Italy is also directly involved with this plan and the government signed agreements with USA without discussing them with the Parliament and without informing the population.”
 
Today Giorgio Schultze will give a speech during the national demonstration for the climate that will be held in these days in Milan and, health conditions allowing, will participate in the march.

•                ◦       On May 12th 2008 Finmeccanica bought DRS Technologies, Inc, American company leader in Defense service and electronic devices. This operation allows Finmeccanica to play a primary role in supporting the US military forces with high technology products.
  ◦     “I  announce with pleasure that on the past February we established with Italy a memorandum for a general agreement, so we can start to develop the possibility to share missile defense technologies, analysis and other types of cooperation”: with these words General Harry Obering III, the missile defense USA Agency director, announced on March 27th, 2007, to the Committee for the armed forces of the House of Representatives, that Italy had officially entered the anti-missiles Shield program, that the US wants to extend to Europe.
  ◦     “On the Italian side a USA-Italy cooperation general Agreement has been recently signed. This agreement extends the cooperation to the defense ballistic missiles sector”, Marco Verzaschi (UDEUR), at that time Defense State undersecretary of the Chamber of Deputies, declared on April 22nd 2007.
  ◦     The cost of 10 interceptor missiles to be installed in Poland has been quantified by General Obering in 2,5 billion dollars, and the cost of the radar installation in Czech Republic in about half billion dollars. The consequence will be that hundreds of million dollars will enter in the accounts of private companies and will exit from public accounts as a participation to the expenses for the “shield” realization.   
  ◦     An example of what we just said is proved by the Italian involvement to the Meads project. “Italy has had industrial cooperation relationships with USA in the missile sector for a long time. Among these relationships one stands out: project and development of the Medium Extended Air Defense System (Meads). Meads is a mobile system valid against tactical missiles, airplanes and helicopters. Meads International, joint venture multinational company with its headquarters in Florida, has been charged for the system fulfillment and in 2005 received a contract for 3,4 billion dollars. The Italian contribution is the 17%, that means more than half billion dollars of public money.

AFET MORE THAN 100 HOURS OF HUNGER STRIKE, GIORGIO SCHULTZE, EUROPEAN SPEAKER FOR THE NEW HUMANISM, DECLARES:

«I will continue with this nonviolent protest in order to denunce the silent menace of this new cold war, this insane rearmament race unleashed by the US plan that wants to install in the Czech Republic and in Poland, in the heart of Europe, military bases for the defense against missiles, that in fact are an attack weapon and the first step for the space militarization and control. This is happening under the accompliced silence of the governements, who draw up secret agreements and continue the negotiations with the US even with the opposition of the majority of the population.»

Giorgio Schultze takes the place of Jan Tamas and Jan Bednar from Prague, who stopped the hunger strike after 21 days, and meanwhile dozens of activists joined the protest starting with the fast from about 30 cities in the rest of Europe, United States and Australia.

On 1st June 2008, Giorgio Schultze, Spokesperson for New Humanism in Europe, has started a hunger strike, continuing the protest of Jan Tamas and Jan Bednar, who have had to interrupt their fast after 18 days due to the detioration of their health.

The protest against the US space shield is broadening across the world. Today, Giorgio Schultze joins Jan Tamas and Jan Bednar in Prague, Federica Fratini and Edoardo Calizza in Rome, Dino Mancarella in Trieste, Ivan Marchetti and Andrea Casa in Turin, Joaquin Valenzuela in Bologna, Jose Alvarez in Ferrol, Spain, Dr Hassan Nayeb Hashem in Austria, Bruce Gagnon in Brunswick, Maine, USA, Sung-Hee Choi in New York, Gareth Smith in Australia and many others who since the 13th May have fasted and organised initiatives to denouce the situation and raise awareness.

“This is a nonviolent protext to denounce one of the greatest situations of violence of the present moment” explains Schultze. “The silent threat of a new Cold War, a crazy arms race unleashed by the United States’s plan to install anti-missile bases in the heart of Europe – Czech Republic and Poland – which constitutes in reality, an attack weapon and the first step to control and militarise space. All of this with the complicit silence of governments that require secret agreements and continue negotiations with the United States despite the opposition of the vast majority of the population as is happening in the Czech Republic. From the start of this protest messages of support and solidarity have arrived from across the planet (see www.nonviolenza.net) and I would like to highlight among those giving their support the MEPs Giulietto Chiesa, Luisa Morgantini, Roberto Musacchio, Vittorio Agnoletto and the Nordic Green Left Alliance (NGLA) who are distancing themselves from the silence of the European Parliament regarding this issue. I consider it fundamental that the European Parliament takes a position on this, therefore on the 12th and 13th June I will go to Brussels with a European delegation on the occasion of the Agora on climate issues and I will ask for a meeting with the President and Vice-President and a plenary session in order to explain the position of this vast protest movement against the shield, with the aim of stopping this dangerous project that puts in danger the peace and co-existence of our peoples”

We don’t want new military bases of foreign powers on European soil nor the expansion of those already in existence. We want the dismantling of all nuclear arsenals.

Permanent presence against the space shield in Sant’Eustorgio square in Miland. On Wednesady May 14 the permanent presence against the space shield in Sant’Eustorgio square in Milan has started. In the photos Lucia and Francesca, the first ones to start the hunger strike, and some moments of the activity. We will go on in the next days with collection of signatures against the space shield, music, artistic activities and initiatives of denounce.
