The Invisibles against US missile defense
Letter of Giorgio Schultze to czech ambassadors in European contries
Dear Mr. Ambassador,
On the 4th of July the United States celebrates its independence day. This is the date which marks, for an American, the birth of democracy in their country.
Today, July 4, 2008 we are faced with the dramatic fall of democracy and we are witnessing that some European governments are transforming their countries into de facto US colonies. They are giving priority to US military and economic policies instead of the right to life, to freedom and the pursuit of happiness of their own people, the very sames values sanctioned by the Independence Declaration being celebrated today.
We would like to remind your country's government that 70% of Czechs are against the installation of a US military base in their territory and that all over the world thousands of people are protesting against this very dangerous and insane project which is putting the people of Europe and of the world at grave risk (http://www.nonviolence.cz/)
Next week, Condoleezza Rice, will visit the Czech Republic to sign the agreements regarding the installation of the radar base. We believe it is illegitimate that a single European government signs an agreement which compromises the safety of over 600,000,000 Europeans.
We believe your government should not accept this responsibility. We officially ask that your government refuse to sign any document regarding this issue with the present Bush administration.
With this gesture, in this difficult historical moment, the Czech Republic could give the world a clear signal towards peace, well being and progress for all.
Hoping to share with you the profound values of this day of independence, kindly accept my best regards,
Giorgio Schultze
European Spokesperson for New Humanism
