Ottawa Peace Festival 2009

14.9.2009 - Pressenza IPA
Promotes Peace, Unity and Harmony. Media release by the Ottawa Chapter, Canadian Dept. of Peace Initiative.

----
The United Nations days of International Peace, September 21, and Nonviolence, October 02 will be again marked in Ottawa this year by a 13-day Festival of Peace events. The Peace Festival 2009 is being organized by the Ottawa Chapter of the Canadian Department of Peace Initiative (CDPI) www.departmentofpeace.ca . The festival will focus on the themes of Peace, Unity, and Harmony celebrating citizen-level activism for peace locally, nationally, and globally.

Of National significance, on June 17th, 2009, in Parliament a Motion by Ms. Francine Lalonde (La Pointe-de-l'Île, BQ) on International Day of Peace was unanimously endorsed by all parties stating: "That, in the opinion of the House, September 21 of each year should be declared International Day of Peace." (2nd Session of the 40th Canadian Parliament, Hansard No. 077). The UN Resolution on IDP states: 'May the Peace Day indeed be a day of peace' where all nations and peoples will 'honour a cessation of hostilities for the duration of the Day....'

In the fall of 2008, the Ottawa Peace Festival attracted 20 grassroots peace events in 15 days 'without a dime from government or corporate sponsors'. It was mostly a result of the work of those with passion and commitment for nonviolent peace and justice who have pitched in time and effort as their contribution in kind and sometimes personal money. The program showed that there is a longing in the public for an increased citizen level participation in building a culture of peace. It was a big success.

The Festival fits well with the inclusive vision of the coordinating organizers. The Canadian Department of Peace Initiative has the goal of working to evolve a culture of non killing peace, to enhance women and youth participation in peace-building, and to explore ways of resolving conflicts through nonviolent means so that Canada is recognized globally as a peacemaker and a peace-builder.

The CDPI is a non-partisan, non-profit, civil society organization with 12 chapters across Canada in Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, Brampton, Hamilton, and London.
