Peace Week 2009 to protect life

14.9.2009 - Equipo Pressenza Colombia
Because “no part of life is repeatable, every person is irreplaceable, and every death is irreversible”, Peace Week 2009 will be celebrated this September 5th through 13th all over Colombia as an invitation to protect life. This year’s Peace Week is an initiative of the World March for Peace and Non-Violence whose global trek will bring it through Colombia on December 15th.

Peace Week is a social movement that has been organizing public actions every year since 1994 to raise awareness and boost social mobilization in favor of peace and against all forms of belligerence. Peace Week is sponsored by the REDEPAZ (Colombian Network of Initiatives for Peace and against War), the Episcopal Conference of Colombia, and the SEPAS organization. Around 20 or so other organizations are supporting this year’s Peace Week.

For REDEPAZ, Peace Week is a part of Colombia’s heritage, for those who worked hard to make it a reality, for the numerous programs under development throughout the country, and for the people who have persevered in the face of war and violence.

Life is the most degraded value in Colombia. Every day we hear in the news that someone’s life was snatched away from them by some form of violence: stray bullets, “false positives”, homicide, domestic violence, street violence, assassination by marginally legal groups, call them guerrillas or paramilitaries, land mines, among the many forms of violence.

This year, once again, Peace Week is betting on LIFE, on its sacred, unique, marvelous, and unrepeatable value.

In 2009, Peace Week is acting in concert with other peace and non-violence initiatives like the Global Peace Summit which will be held on October 1st through 4th, the 3rd International Seminar on Non-Violence, scheduled for November 10th through 14th, and the World March for Peace and Non-Violence, whose global trek will bring it through Colombia on December 15th through the 17th.

The World March for Peace and Non-Violence is made up of thousands of initiatives which seek to create a combined global effort in the hopes of raising global awareness of the urgency to move beyond all forms of violence, with particular emphasis on the pressing need to dismantle the nuclear arsenals, resolve conflicts diplomatically, and withdraw troops from occupied territories. The initiatives include everything from workshops organized by students and teachers in their classes and megaconcerts in a number of cities, to thousands of social, cultural, recreational, and academic activities.
