La Paz, 2009-04-16Evo Morales endured a five-day hunger strike, an exemplary act for more than 3,000 Bolivians living both inside and out of Bolivia who also followed the gesture inspired by a Gandhian tradition of Active Nonviolence.

The campaign culminated in legislators approving an historical electoral law increasing political representation of people from low income rural areas.

At the end of the hunger strike on Tuesday, the Bolivian Vice President Álvaro García Linera praised it as a victory over the country’s elite.

Vice President García Linera exclaimed, “If the oligarchy insults me, if they attack me, this means that I am doing my job. This means that I am defending the people. This means that I am fulfilling my constitutional duty to protect the country.” This bill of law ensures that the next Presidential and Congressional elections of Bolivia will be held this upcoming December.
