GALLATIN — The grandson of Mohandas K. Gandhi spread his message of non-violence at a recent speech to students, faculty and guests at Volunteer State.
"If we were born violent, we wouldn't need military schools and martial arts institutes to teach us to kill," Arun Gandhi said.
He stressed during his lecture that non-violence means more than avoiding violent acts, tying it to use of natural resources and conspicuous consumption.
That lesson came from his grandfather, who helped India win its independence from British rule using non-cooperation and non-violence.
Speaking Friday, Arun Gandhi recalled when his grandfather made him spend hours at night searching for a discarded pencil. The peace activist told his grandson that failing to care for the planet's resources was an act of violence against the Earth and that over-consuming was an act of violence against the poor.
