Cyclists for Peace
13.2.2009 - www.giorgioschultze.eu
For the fifth year the Bike Ride for Peace took place in Barcelona, coinciding with the commemoration of Gandhi’s death – a day when Nonviolence is studied in schools across Catalonia. The World March for Peace and Nonviolence was present in the event.
Members of the promotion team of the March in Catalonia (Món sense Guerres, Arbre de la Pau, enFoc, among others) participated in the organisation of the Bike Ride for Peace that Intermom-Oxfam holds every year in Barcelona.
The day started with the reading of the Bike Ride Manifesto and following this, while three children read a ceremony of nonviolence, the more than two hundred cyclists let off white balloons with statements and images of Peace in to the air. Following this the Bike Ride toured the streets of the city until arriving in Ciutadella Park. Here there were stands, activities related to supporting actions, clowns, sporting competitions, workshops, music, games and the raffling off of a bicycle, whose funds are destined to a project to provide food for the population of Gaza.
In the square, Francesc Mateu i Hosta, director of Intermón-Oxfam, referred to the situation of the civilian victims of war, those who would be receiving food aid from the Intermon programme. Then Carles Martín, spokesperson for World without Wars in Catalonia alluded to the World March as a continuation of demonstrations for Peace and Nonviolence.
Giorgio Schultze, European Spokesperson for New Humanism, very positively valued this action, saying ”it’s important to publicise the World March for Peace and Nonviolence, in all possible occasions, especially among people and organisations that are working in the areas of peace and nonviolence, because together we will amplify our voices and we will be able to transmit them to thousands and millions of people.”
