The Invisibles against US missile defense

New Plzeň regional council against U.S. radar on its soil

17.12.2008 - CTK

Plzen, West Bohemia, Dec 9 (CTK) - The new council of the Plzen region Tuesday officially rejected the planned stationing of a U.S. radar base in the region and supported that a referendum be held on the project, regional governor Milada Emmerova (opposition Czech Social Democrats, CSSD) told CTK.

Emmerova said the council agreed on the resolution mainly because some two-thirds of Czechs were against the U.S. base pushed through by the centre-right government of Mirek Topolanek (Civic Democrats, ODS).

The new regional leadership cancelled the resolution in which the previous leadership headed by the ODS supported the country's inclusion in the missile defence system within NATO in January 2007.

The CSSD councillors argue that a number of new expert and political views have been opposed to the base since then.

Emmerova said the region is prepared to organise a referendum as soon as a law on such referendum is passed in parliament.

The mayors of municipalities from the Brdy area where the U.S. base is to be located mostly believe that the region's new stance will have no or only minimal influence.

The Brdy military grounds is situated in the Plzen region and the neighbouring Central Bohemian region.

Along with 10 interceptor missiles in Poland, the radar is to be an element of the U.S. anti-missile shield that is to protect the United States and a large part of Europe against missiles that states like Iran might launch.

Czech and U.S. representatives have signed the main radar treaty and the SOFA agreement on the status of U.S. staff at the base.

The Czech upper house passed the treaties last week. The lower house is yet to vote on them, but majority support for the radar among deputies is uncertain.
