The Invisibles against US missile defense

Czechs ask Obama to drop radar plans

23.11.2008 - presstv.ir
Opponents of the US anti-missile defense system in the Czech Republic have called on President-elect Barack Obama to drop the plans.

In a letter sent to Obama, the movement Non-Violence, along with the Mayors' League against the Radar asked the US President-elect to reconsider plans to install elements of the US anti-missile defense system in the Czech soil.

The US plans to deploy 10 long-range missile interceptors in Poland and a radar site in the Czech Republic to counter threats from what Washington considers 'rogue' countries such as Iran, and North Korea.

The letter was signed by 29 mayors from the cities near the Brdy military district, where the radar base is to be installed. It lies some 90 kilometers southwest of the capital Prague.

Jan Tamas, a spokesman for Non-Violence, said the opponents of the radar base plan to launch a campaign against the US missile shield plan 'on the European level' during the Czech EU presidency in 2009.

"We want the EU to adopt a clear stand, to start a discussion on the issue," Tamas said.

Opinion polls show that the majority of Czechs are against the installation of the radar base in their country.

Russia is also strongly opposed to the deployment of the system, saying the plan poses a threat to its strategic interests. Moscow has threatened to give a harsh response to Washington should the missile shield be installed.
