The Invisibles against US missile defense

Lindis Percy and Laila Packer - CAAB

5.6.2008

Laila and I met Jan Tams in Omaha recently, we sent him a message of
support just before he started the hunger strike and he wrote back.  I
think about them so much and all the others who have joined in the
hunger strike.

Every Tuesday evening for the past eight years, the Campaign for the
Accountability of American Bases (CAAB) has held a peaceful
demonstration outside the American base at Menwith Hill in the north
of the UK. The base has several roles and is the largest US
intelligence and surveillance base outside America. One of the crucial
roles the base plays is a key connection with Missile Defense (also
Fylingdales). In 1997 CAAB was the first campaign to find out that
Menwith Hill was to be a key component of the American Missile Defense
System.

Tonight (6-8 pm UK time) we were again outside Menwith Hill holding
the weekly demonstration. We talked about the situation in the Czech
Republic and the tireless protests which have resulted in 70% of the
Czech Republican people opposing the siting of the Missile Defense
radar facilities at Brdy. We talked to the Ministry of Defense Police
Agency (who 'police' the demonstration) about this and told them about
Jan Tamas and Jan Bednar and their situation. We kept a minute's
silence in solidarity with them for their moral and physical courage.
Our silence also reflected our deep concern for them. The two Jans
were far away but we were and are with them in their courageous
struggle. The police kept their silence too. Our thoughts and prayers
are with them.

In peace
